Training Days 2015 August 29th & 30th 2015
A fireground tends to be a chaotic place. Success may only come through the organized approach. Each company must complement each other when it comes time to get the job done. Realizing this, the Into The Smoke Training Weekend will focus on offering students an opportunity to practice the most important tasks of each type of company on a structure fire under the most realistic live fire scenarios permissible.
Additionally, we are adding a vehicle extrication portion to the training as many departments also handle the rescue responsibilities in their communities. When the call comes, time is of the essence. Our goal is to convey street-proven tactics that can be adopted by most any extrication company in the name of saving lives.
There will be three company based disciplines: Engine Company, Truck (Ladder) Company, and Vehicle Extrication Basics.
Engine Company disciplines will include: Introductions to long length preconnected attack hoselines and the use of hose “racks” will be covered. Additionally, various live fire scenarios focused on hoseline advancement all floors of an occupied structure and handling basement fires. Also, unique to this discipline, we will include a “thermal balance burn” in which students will observe fire behavior in a vented and unvented structure and fire hose stream application for each.
Truck Company disciplines will include: Various methods of forcible entry through inward and outward swinging doors, security bar removal, cutting padlocks, vertical ventilation via a pitched roof, throwing ground ladders in low manpower situations, live fire, full weight victim search and rescue on the fire floor as well as live fire VES (vent/enter/search) of to upper floors.
Vehicle Extrication will introduce students to the appropriate methods of efficiently handling entrapment involving a passenger vehicle on all four tires, on its side, and overturned. Methods of practical stabilization and hydraulic rescue tool usage will be explained to students. Rescue Company members from the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department in Prince George’s County, Maryland will be exclusively helming this discipline.
